Palau is a group of more than 500 islands, covering 458km², in the Micronesia area of Oceania, to the southeast of the Philippines. After three decades as part of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific under US administration, this westernmost cluster of the Caroline Islands chose independence in 1978, instead of joining the Federated States of Micronesia.
