Southeast China has always been outward-looking. Many of China's mariners and traders have come from this region and most overseas Chinese can trace their ancestry to the Southeast.

Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province in southern China. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 12.7 million, making it the third largest city in China after Shanghai and Beijing.

Shenzhen is one of the most populous and richest cities in China. It is situated in Guangdong, China on the Hong Kong border about 40 km north of Hong Kong Central and approximately 100 km south of Guangzhou.

Zhuhai is the name of a city, and Special Economic Zone, in Guangdong Province, China.

Guangdong is a province in Southeast China on the border with Hong Kong. It is China's most populous province, and one of the richest.

Fujian is a coastal province in South East China. It has long been an outward-looking province, much involved in maritime trade, and is the ancestral home for many overseas Chinese, especially in Southeast Asia and the Philippines.

Hainan is an island province, the southernmost part of China, just across the Gulf of Tonkin from Vietnam.
