Afar is a region in the north-east of Ethiopia, which borders Eritrea. The new town of Semera on the paved highway from Awash to Assab has been the capital since 2007, replacing the previous capital, Asayita.

The Danakil Depression is a desert area in the Afar region of northeastern Ethiopia, north of the Great Rift Valley that is widely known locally as the Dallol depression.
Awash National Park is in Ethiopia. The Lower Valley of the Awash, a site where some of the earliest human remains have been found, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980.
